Jewellery Care Guide
I've come to believe that the things we choose to wear can carry a piece of who we are. A map on a chain. A shape that reminds us of home. When you wear a Nayla Nobility piece, you carry that story with you, and I want it to stay as beautiful as the day it arrived.
The good news is that caring for it doesn't take much. It takes a few small habits, practised with intention. Here they are.
What your piece is made of
Every piece is made from 316L stainless steel, a grade known for standing up to rust and corrosion.
The colour comes from a PVD coating. PVD stands for physical vapour deposition, a process that bonds a fine layer of colour to the steel inside a vacuum. It is a technologically advanced type of coating. However, water, chemicals and everyday friction will wear it down over time. That's the nature of anything we love and wear often. It's also why a little care goes such a long way.
All four finishes, 18K gold, rose gold, silver and black, need the same care.
Wearing it every day
Let it be the last thing you put on. Perfume, body lotion, sunscreen, hairspray and make-up all leave a fine film behind. Give them a moment to dry before you reach for your jewellery, and its glow will last longer.
And the first thing you take off. Before you step into the shower, run a bath, wash your face or hair, or head for the pool, the sea, a sauna or a hot tub, take your jewellery off and set it somewhere safe.
Be gentle with the clasp. When you fasten or unfasten your necklace, hold the clasp rather than the chain or pendant, and never pull on the extender.
If it gets wet
Life happens. A sudden downpour, an unexpected splash. When it does, don't worry. Just dry your piece right away:
Pat it gently with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. No hard rubbing.
Take a moment with the clasp, the chain links and the openwork, where water likes to hide.
Let it rest on a dry cloth for a few minutes, so it's completely dry before you put it away.
A little care, every seven wears
Every time you wear your piece, it picks up a little of your day: the natural oils of your skin, a trace of make-up, the warmth of a long afternoon. None of it shows at first. But it adds up. So after every seven wears, give your jewellery a few quiet minutes of attention.
You'll need a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, such as a clean microfibre cloth, and a soft, clean make-up brush.
Wipe the whole piece gently with the dry cloth. Remember the back of the pendant, the clasp, the chain, and the earring posts and backs.
Brush the openwork. Pass the brush lightly through the cut-outs to lift any dust from the map lines.
Look again. If a mark is still there, breathe on it softly and wipe once more.
For stubborn marks only, dampen a corner of the cloth with lukewarm water and a single drop of mild, fragrance-free soap. Wipe the mark, then wipe again with a clean, damp corner to remove the soap. Dry the piece right away, just as you would if it got wet. Never soak or rinse your jewellery.
Let it rest on a dry cloth for a few minutes before you put it away.
What to keep away from
Some things that seem helpful can do real harm to the coating. Please keep your jewellery away from:
Jewellery polishing cloths and silver polish. They're made for solid silver, and the fine abrasive in them wears down a coated finish.
Toothpaste, baking soda and scouring pads, or any home remedy that depends on scrubbing.
Ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
Chlorine, bleach and household cleaning products.
Nail polish remover, acetone and alcohol-based sprays.
Perfume or hairspray sprayed directly onto the piece.
Paper towels and rough fabrics, which can leave fine scratches.
Knocks against hard surfaces, like tables, sinks and other jewellery.
Putting it away
How we put something away says a lot about how much it means to us.
Make sure it's completely dry before you store it.
Give each piece its own space, in its pouch or a soft-lined compartment, so pieces can't scratch one another.
Fasten the clasp on each necklace first, so the chain doesn't tangle.
Choose a cool, dry place, away from the steam of the bathroom and out of direct sunlight.
When you travel, keep each piece in a pouch rather than loose in a bag or toiletry case.
Your one-year colour guarantee
I stand behind every piece I send out. That's why each one comes with a one-year guarantee on its PVD colour, starting the day it's delivered. If the colour fades or changes within that year, and you've cared for it as this guide describes, we will make it right.
The guarantee doesn't cover colour changes caused by:
Regularly wearing the piece in water, such as when showering, bathing, swimming, or in a sauna or hot tub
Contact with chemicals, such as chlorine, bleach, cleaning products, nail polish remover, or perfume sprayed directly onto the piece
Abrasive cleaning, such as polishing cloths, silver polish, toothpaste or ultrasonic cleaners
Scratches, knocks, bending or breakage from accidents or rough handling
The guarantee covers the colour. A splash you dried right away won't affect it.
How to make a guarantee claim
